Derek has always seen being nosy as the key to being a good researcher - great research comes from a desire to constantly ask ‘why do some people do this and why do some people do that?’ Research has fascinated Derek since he first went off to study Accountancy and Statistics at Southampton University and he is probably one of the few people ever to come out of university having made a profit; in his postgrad year he worked on the Heathrow Noise Study and on Swiss Canton Political Research! Before setting up Critical in 1987, he was a statistician for the Post Office and Head of Small Business Research at BT and he set up MRE Ltd, the UK’s first CATI Agency. These days, with 8 grandchildren to entertain Derek takes a more hands-off approach to the company, turning up occasionally as a consultant statistician (just to keep everyone on their toes!) In his spare time he now takes the grandkids swimming, does charity work for the Rotary Club and writes books for children. His best travelling experience was a 6-day hike in Tasmania and his music taste covers everything from Clapton to Elgar. He is frequently mistaken for Eric Idle – which is ok because in an alternate universe he would happily be working as part of the Monty Python team!
